Converting molecular monolayers into functional membranes.
Carbon nanomembranes are constructed from monolayers of molecular amphiphiles assembled on a water surface. The floating molecular film is cross-linked to form a mechanically stable nanomembrane. By varying the type of molecules, the surface area, and the exposure condition, the membrane's stiffness, thickness, and permeability can be tailored.
متن کاملAdvanced functional polymer membranes
This feature article provides a comprehensive overview on the development of polymeric membranes having advanced or novel functions in the various membrane separation processes for liquid and gaseous mixtures (gas separation, reverse osmosis, pervaporation, nanofiltration, ultrafiltration, microfiltration) and in other important applications of membranes such as biomaterials, catalysis (includi...
متن کاملMolecular architecture of basement membranes.
Basement membranes are specialized extracellular matrices with support, sieving, and cell regulatory functions. The molecular architectures of these matrices are created through specific binding interactions between unique glycoprotein and proteoglycan protomers. Type IV collagen chains, using NH2-terminal, COOH-terminal, and lateral association, form a covalently stabilized polygonal framework...
متن کاملTaming Membranes: Functional Immobilization of Biological Membranes in Hydrogels
Single molecule studies on membrane proteins embedded in their native environment are hampered by the intrinsic difficulty of immobilizing elastic and sensitive biological membranes without interfering with protein activity. Here, we present hydrogels composed of nano-scaled fibers as a generally applicable tool to immobilize biological membrane vesicles of various size and lipid composition. I...
متن کاملMolecular-scale structural and functional characterization of sparsely tethered bilayer lipid membranes.
Surface-tethered biomimetic bilayer membranes (tethered bilayer lipid membranes (tBLMs)) were formed on gold surfaces from phospholipids and a synthetic 1-thiahexa(ethylene oxide) lipid, WC14. They were characterized using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, neutron reflection (NR), and Fourier-transform infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (FT-IRRAS) to obtain functional and structu...
